End-to-end product design including UX research, UI design wireframing, and prototyping by Elizabeth Kupchella

The tool to manage your journey through Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Obstacle
Full-protocol Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapy program that requires patients to track their emotions, behaviors, and skills every day for a year.
That's a lot of data to keep track of.
Google Spreadsheets are most commonly used as the standard diary card template even though filling one out is the last thing anyone wants to do before bed.
Opportunity
I'm incredibly passionate about the intersection between mental health and technology.
I started DBT around the same time I was working on my Professional Certificate in UX Design, and couldn't help but wish I had a dedicated mobile diary card app.

So, I built the one I wish I had: a mobile diary card that simplifies and encourages daily tracking. It allows users to log emotions, behaviors, and DBT skills, review skill definitions, and export data for therapy, all in a discreet, user-friendly tool.

A better way to track emotions, including sliding scales where users can specifically account for the intensity of the emotion

A better way to track the skills you used today –– add some context to help jog your memory during your individual therapy sessions.

What Makes Better Brain... Better?
Clients and clinicians come up with the behaviors they want to keep a close eye on throughout full-protocol DBT at the very beginning.

These can be any behavioral patterns or routines you want to change or eliminate entirely – doomscrolling was one of mine!

Add paragraph text. Click “Edit Text” to update the font, size and more. To change and reuse text themes, go to Site Styles.

Better Features and Resources
DBT Therapy offers dozens of skill to choose from in moments of crisis or extreme emotional activation – but they're hard to recall all at once.
The Skill Match Quiz is a feature exclusive to Better Brain; a place to input how you're currently feeling and how you wish you were feeling. The quiz takes the guess work out of which skill to choose from and meets you right where you're at, walking you through an exercise to get you where you want to be.

Better Session Preparation
When it comes time for your individual therapy session, you can either walk through a spreadsheet you've been filling out each day, or you can reference your suggested agenda.

The suggested agenda pulls your highlights throughout the week –– spikes or extremities in certain emotions, a skill you used that really helped you, and any flags for target behaviors you might've engaged in.

You don't have to decide what the spreadsheet means anymore –– your highlights are pulled for you so you can get to what matters most in session.

Better UI
I designed each of the menus to replicate the different parts of the human brain. While it may feel small and optional, it's these kinds of details that make Better Brain more personal, unique, and engaging.
